Butterworth filters are not difftcult to understand. A low-pass Bunenvorthfilter is like a moving average: It both attenuates higher-frequency (shorter-periodicity) signals (or noise) and passes lower-frequency (higher-periodicity) signals unimpeded; in other words, it smooths data.
