Throughout the development of the Brightkite native application, the first-time user experience was an unwavering consideration. From a business perspective, a native iPhone application offered Brightkite an opportunity to grow and expand. Critical to this objective were the first-time users who would ultimately download the Brightkite iPhone application but had no previous exposure to the service. Our job was to ensure the fewest possible entry barriers for first timers. The sign-up process represents the greatest hurdle for a successful first-time user experience, and we erroneously began engineering a cumbersome, multiscreen process. REST supports the operations that are needed by most database applications. Along with getting values from the web service, REST also provides verbs for posting new data, making updates, and deleting records. You can manage the records as follows: Create a new high-score record: Send an HTTP POST request to http://localhost:3000/ high_scores.xml, with the data representation of the new high score in XML format. The server replies with the high-score data representation in XML, including the ID for the new record and created_at and updated_at date and time stamps. Update the data for a high-score record: Send an HTTP PUT request that includes the ID of the record to update. For example, to update the record with an ID of 1, send http:// localhost:3000/high_scores/1.xml, with the data representation of the modified record in XML format. The server responds with the modified record representation in XML, including the updated_at date and time stamp. Delete a high-score record: Send an HTTP DELETE request to the URI associated with the representation of that record (an XML representation of the record to be deleted isn t necessary). For example, to delete the high-score record with an ID of 1, send an HTTP DELETE request to http://localhost:3000/high_scores/1.xml. The server simply responds with a report of whether the DELETE operation was successful, with an HTTP response status code of 200.
