At first glance, this shortcut might seem more efficient than Apple s approach, but in my experience, it causes quite a few accidental taps. While attempting to scroll, users can quite easily accidentally activate a field or tap a button. Combining the data entry overview and the data entry view in a single view takes focus away from the task of actually entering data and makes the user cognizant of the need to tap and swipe carefully. Focus is the beauty of Apple s data entry paradigm. Because the keyboard takes up so much space on the screen, it s best to have data entry focused on a single field or small group of fields that fit above the keyboard. Even the Mail application (see Figure 1-6) doesn t hide data entry fields. The Mail data entry view does scroll, and you can access additional data entry fields by tapping on the Cc/Bcc, From row. Even so, when you first create a new mail message, every immediately editable field is contained within the view. None are hidden behind the keyboard.

This code creates an instance variable called myTableView in the RootViewController class, and sets up an IBOutlet property for this variable. This is the Xcode way to connect code elements like variables with GUI objects in Interface Builder. You also declare a message called reloadData, which will be used to cause the UITableView to reload its data from its data source. Now that you have changed the interface of the RootViewController class, you need to change the implementation to match. Select the RootViewController.m file in the file list to load it in the editor pane, carefully insert the code in bold in Listing 2-7 into the proper place in the file, and then save it.

The Brightkite service has three types of pages accessible through the activity streams: posts, places, and people. Posts are check-ins, notes, or photos from a person at a specific place. An iPod touch can also help you be more productive. You can use it to access and read just about any PDF file or other document with the GoodReader app. You can take notes with the basic Notes app, or step up to the advanced Evernote app, which has amazing capabilities for integrating audio, pictures, and text notes, and as well as syncing everything to a web site. You can also use your iPod touch to set an alarm, calculate a tip, see what direction you are walking in, and record a voice memo (see Table 6).
